Similarities and Differences between the Glass Forming Mechanism in Polymers and Metallic Liquids

چکیده

Survey of categorization of glass forming mechanisms in liquids based on the known principles reported in the literature is given. The metallic glass-forming liquids can be divided into two types – strong (with high glass forming ability) and fragile (with low glass forming ability). While the bulk amorphous alloys formed from strong liquids do not exhibit sensitivity to low temperature relaxation near as well as below room temperature, the glasses formed from fragile liquids contain mobile “hot points” that are active during low temperature or thermo-elastic treatments. Based on this interpretation, the structural imprints induced by treatments at liquid nitrogen (LN) temperature as well as by the absorption of hydrogen (H-absorption) are explained.

On the Fragility of Bulk Metallic Glass Forming Liquids

In contrast to pure metals and most non-glass forming alloys, metallic glass-formers are moderately strong liquids in terms of fragility. The notion of fragility of an undercooling liquid reflects the sensitivity of the viscosity of the liquid to temperature changes and describes the degree of departure of the liquid kinetics from the Arrhenius equation. In general, the fragility of metallic gl...

Size-Dependent Viscosity in the Super-Cooled Liquid State of a Bulk Metallic Glass

We experimentally investigate the role of sample size on the viscosity of a bulk metallic glass by examining pressure driven flows in nm-scale confinement. A Pt57.5Cu14.7Ni5.3P22.5 metallic glass in the super-cooled liquid state is extruded into isolated cylindrical pores of varying nano-scale dimensions, down to 40 nm. The apparent viscosity of the liquid as a function of sample size is determ...

Deformation of Glass-Forming Metallic Liquids: Configurational Changes and Their Relation to Elastic Softening

5.1 Abstract The change in the configurational enthalpy of metallic-glass-forming liquids induced by mechanical deformation and its effect on elastic softening is assessed. The acoustically measured shear modulus is found to decrease with increasing configurational enthalpy by a dependence similar to one obtained by softening via thermal annealing. This establishes that elastic softening is gov...

Structural disorder in metallic glass-forming liquids

We investigated structural disorder by a new structural parameter, quasi-nearest atom (QNA), in atomistic configurations of eight metallic glass-forming systems generated through molecular dynamics simulations at various temperatures. Structural analysis reveals that the scaled distribution of the number of QNA appears to be an universal property of metallic liquids and the spatial distribution...

A Comparative Study of Glass-Working Motifs of Seljuks in Iran and Fatimids in Egypt during 12th-13th Centuries (A.D)

Glass-working was one of the dominant arts in the Islamic period. In the time of Iranian Seljuks and, contemporaneous with them, Egyptian Fatimids, this art was so innovative that such an era is considered as the glorious period in the history of Islamic glass-working in the two countries. In addition to contemporaneity of Seljuks and Fatimids, economic and cultural relations between the two re...
